If you have a family member who is currently imprisoned, the best option to keep in touch with them is via an inmate-texting application. These apps are designed to comply with prison regulations and allow family members and friends to send messages, pictures and video calls, eCards and money to their trust accounts in prison. There are additional federal inmate apps that provide additional services like phone calls and video visits.
The JPay application, for example, enables family and friends to pay money into an inmate's trust account, along with email, photos, eCards, and video grams. It also lets them create personal postcards using photos of their own. It also provides a safer and more secure alternative to traditional mail.
Another popular inmate text app is GettingOut, which offers "simple and reliable communication" between inmates and their loved ones. The app is available at select correctional facilities, and allows inmates to upload photos and send messages to family members and friends on their tablets.
